Networking Abroad: Easier Or More Difficult?

Hi Everyone, My next guest blog post on Adrienne Graham's online Fearless Woman Magazine was uploaded yesterday and if you are interested, here is how it starts...

"Anyone who is serious about proactively moving their career or business forward, knows they need to network. If this is you, hopefully you have already read Adrienne’s Go Ahead, Talk to Strangers: The Modern Girl’s Guide To Fearless Networking and you are already investing time each month into meeting new people, building quality relationships and offering help to contacts in your inner circle.

Networking Abroad

Many women who are great networkers at home and have worked hard to establish a solid network, worry what it will be like to network (for work and/or pleasure) if they are relocated abroad.

“I am only going abroad for two years. How will I have enough time to build up my network abroad?”

"How can people know how credible I am back home?”

“Will it be easier or more difficult to network on foreign shores?”

To read more, please support Adrienne and click on the full article on her site here: Networking Abroad: Easier or More Difficult?

I encourage you to leave your comments, feedback, experiences on her site (or ours) as well.

Thanks and best wishes, Everyone! Andrea. :-)

W.I.N. Conference in Paris This October

Hi Everyone, It is very exciting that the 2010 W.I.N. (Women's International Networking) conference will be in Paris, France!

If you have not been to a W.I.N. conference, I can personally attest that they are warm, friendly, open, inviting and full of great networking opportunities with wonderful women from all different countries... although that said, more women based in Europe seem to attend than women based elsewhere, but that is a natural consequence of the conferences always being held in Europe... and as the Seinfeld saying goes... "not that there's anything wrong with that!" :-)

If you are looking for inspiration, I encourage you to consider going this year to W.I.N. in Paris, October 6 - 8 (9).

Registration opens May 1st.

If you are looking to inspire, hurry and submit your proposal to speak at the conference! They typically involve 120 - 150 speakers, workshop leaders and coaches - again testimony to their 'open' philosophy, which I applaud them for. Deadline for speaking proposals is 10 May. Speakers will not be paid, but will only need to pay the discounted price of 795 Euros to attend the conference. To see who spoke last year, just click here.

Interested In Writing For Fearless Woman Magazine?

Hi Everyone, For some time now, I have been following Adrienne Graham's Empowered Career Women Blog and have mentioned her here a couple of times. Adrienne is an experienced diversity recruiter, who recently published Go Ahead, Talk To Strangers: The Modern Girl's Guide To Fearless Networking.

One of the things I like about Adrienne is her constant encouragement of women to defy stereotypes and to make their mark on the world. In true Adrienne style, she is launching a quarterly magazine in January 2010 entitled Fearless Woman Magazine... and she is looking for writers.

"We are... announcing an open call for writers. We are currently looking for new and experienced writers with the ability to resonate with our core audience. If interested please contact us... or indicate that you're interested in the message box when you sign up at the website. You may download the Writer's Guidelines at this link. For a media kit, editorial calendar or advertising information, please contact us via email." Click here to learn more.

Good luck Adrienne - and good luck to any interested writers amongst us! Andrea

Australian Expats & Repats

Hi Everyone, If you are an Australian living abroad (or recently returned home) and you have not heard of Advance, you might like to take a minute to check out their site.

It was not until Advance invited me (thanks to Sue Ellson of the Newcomers Network) to an event last month that I learnt about Advance - and I am impressed by their 11,000 (!) members, global reach and extensive industry networks.

By the way, I see on the Advance home page that a link to the Australian Woman of the Year in the UK Award, sponsored by Qantas. The inaugural winner of the award in 2008 was Glenda Stone (congratulations Glenda) who we interviewed as an Expat Women Success Story in 2007. I met Glenda at the event last month and she is lovely. If you are an Australian and would like to be in the running for 2009's award, visit the link above and good luck!

Professional Women's Network in Turkey

Hi Everyone, If you are Istanbul, you might be interested in the new International Professional Women of Istanbul Network (IPWIN) launched this month by the International Women of Istanbul.

"We are interested to hear from women who are working in Istanbul, whether it be in a business environment, in the services sector, the not-for-profit sector, in government or in the academic field. We also welcome women who may have just moved to Istanbul and not sure what direction their career should take or women who have been on a career break through children, choice or circumstance.

IPWIN will be a place where professional women in Istanbul can come and share stories and experiences, tips and information. We would like to see it as both a professional and social network."

If you are not an expat in Istanbul, but know someone who is, please help the group by 'spreading the word'. Many thanks.

Guanxi: The Art Of Building Relationships In China... and elsewhere

Hello Everyone, We thought we would get into the swing of everything China this month (aka the month of the Olympics) and have sourced this interesting article for you about Guanxi and building relationships in China. In actual fact, even if you're not dealing with China, it's a great reminder about what is important in relationships abroad, namely:

  1. Brand;
  2. Expertise;
  3. Sincerity; and
  4. Track Record.

Take a read and enjoy your day/evening! Thanks.
