Where Have We Been...?
Hi Everyone, My apologies for the lack of updates since moving to our 'real' apartment here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, two weeks ago. In addition to the 231 boxes to unpack and the constant stream of workmen through each day... it has taken two weeks to connect the internet at home... which for me (running a website) - is almost like being without oxygen.
Sure, in between supervising workmen in the apartment, errands and school hour limitations, I was able to go to a wireless café, but it's just not the same. Especially when I had to keep ordering drinks and pretending to drink them... just so I could use their wireless. ;-)
I now appreciate just how many questions we generate each day (such as, What's tomorrow's cinema schedule? What plane seats are left for the holidays? What should we do for my son's school project?) and then answer via Google each night. Without the internet, I found myself open-mouthed, powerless and answering... "aaahhh... I don't know" far too many times lately.
Luckily, our internet got connected tonight just before I felt the earthquake (that rocked Sumatra) here in Kuala Lumpur. It felt empowering again to be able to jump online to check that I was not going crazy and that yes, the chandelier and vase (here on our 31st floor) really were moving!
My learning for the month: Information truly does equal power. May you all have unlimited access to information, technology and power. Andrea :-)

Expat Women Bloggers: Want To Be on Mamapedia... or Listed on Technorati?
Hi Everyone, I recently read in a Technorati newsletter that Mamapedia is looking for bloggers who write on topics that are of interest to mothers, to feature on Mamapedia Voices. They launched earlier this year and are reaching an audience of almost 1 million mothers!
You can get more information by signing up here: http://bit.ly/agucO. (They ask everyone to mention that you found out about this opportunity from Technorati. If you do, please mention ExpatWomen.com too - thanks.)
By the way, I see that Technorati have a blog directory that might interest some of you to list on as well - especially the "Travel" section. You never know who might find you unless you list, right?
Thanks, best wishes and good luck! Andrea.

Repatriate Knowledge Study: Phase Two
Hi Everyone, Stacey M. Peterson at the Florida Institute of Technology is looking for respondents for the second phase of her research study...
"This study investigates how the social dynamics of an organization’s culture may affect the utilization of repatriate international knowledge.
To be eligible for this study, you must:
- Work at an organization with repatriates (you do not need to be a repatriate)
- Be employed at your current organization (does NOT need to be an American company) for a minimum of four months.
Participation in this study consists of answering a number of questions in an anonymous survey and will take approximately 20 minutes. Your personal information will not be recorded and, therefore, will not be connected to any of your responses. Your responses are greatly appreciated.
If you meet all the criteria and wish to participate, please complete the survey online here. If you have any questions, the researcher can be reached at sfehir@fit.edu or visit our repatriate group on LinkedIn at Repatriate Professionals for further discussions. Thanks. "

Looking For An Expat Family Who Moved To Belgium For The Woman's Job
Hi Everyone, Can anyone help a Belgian journalist looking to interview and feature in Good Gevoel ("Feeling Good") magazine, an expat husband/partner who has followed his wife (with children) to Belgium for her job.
Ideally, she would like to speak to a man who is between 35-50 years old, comes from a continent other than Europe (preferably South America, Africa or Asia) and is a "happy houseman - taking care of the household and children - not looking for a new job".
Tough criteria? Maybe. If you match her requirements or know someone who does, please contact Grete Flies as soon as possible. Thanks.

Expat Jobs: Some Industries Hiring, Some Industries Firing
Hi Everyone, Brookfield Global Relocation Services released today a supplementary report to their widely-recognised 2009 Global Relocation Trends Survey. Here are some extracts from their press release:
"Woodridge, Ill. (Sept. 14, 2009) - The ongoing economic downturn has forced many companies to dramatically scale back the number of employees they are relocating for international assignments, but has left other industries virtually unscathed, a new report exploring international mobility trends from Brookfield Global Relocation Services has found.
In fact, certain industries - among them telecommunications, oil and gas - are experiencing an uptick in their employee relocation activities due to mergers, emerging global markets and other factors, according to a recently released report, International Mobility: The Impact of the Current Economic Climate.
The report queried senior international mobility professionals responsible for international assignment strategy at a number of the world's leading companies. Combined, the mobility managers interviewed from a select group of corporations representing a worldwide employee population of more than 2.2 million employees."
**
"The report's findings pointed to four key trends currently facing multinational companies:
- A reduction in the volume of assignments due to the recession. This is occurring in industries that have been hit especially hard by the economic downturn, including: automobile manufacturing, information technology service and the financial services sectors.
- Changes in the volume of assignments. However, these changes are not directly caused by the recession. This trend is impacting the high technology, engineering, retail, financial and information services industries.
- No impact so far, but companies expect a general tightening soon. These industries include pharmaceutical, food and consumer products manufacturing, and logistics sectors.
- An increase in the number of employee relocations. This trend is primarily occurring in the telecommunications, oil and gas sectors, and with some professional services firms.
"...companies and industries that are experiencing increased relocation activity are typically involved in:
- Moving into new international partnership arrangements;
- A merger or acquisition Developing emerging markets;
- Creating global tools, processes and programs;
- Creating a cohesive culture or employer brand; and/or
- Closing long-term global capability and skills gaps."
**
"Brookfield will host a complimentary webinar presentation exploring the findings of this study on Thursday, Sept. 17 (US). Participation in the webinar is free and limited to the first 100 registrants. To register, go to: http://www.brookfieldgrs.com/insights_ideas/grts/2009_GRTS_Economic_Climate_Webinar.asp"

Hi Everyone, Expatica are running a survey on their site where you could win an Amazon voucher to the value of 100 Euros.
It is primarily about expat health concerns abroad, presumably to feed results back to a health insurance company, but it is not too personal and if you are someone who likes to enter competitions, you might like to spend the 10 minutes or so completing it. I did.

Horrible Crime In An Expat Gated Community in Spain
Hi Everyone, I just read a very disturbing story in the Telegraph UK entitled Expat Journey To The Heart Of Darkness.
The sub-title read: "The rape and murder of a child by another child in an expat gated community in Spain forced questions on neighbours that they never wanted to ask themselves."
It is about a horrible crime committed in 2004 - and the recent release of the perpetrator. The author gives her take on the effect of that crime both on her and on her community.
It is a very sad story which reiterates how 'the good life' does not always mean 'the safer life'.

Interested In Writing For Fearless Woman Magazine?

"We are... announcing an open call for writers. We are currently looking for new and experienced writers with the ability to resonate with our core audience. If interested please contact us... or indicate that you're interested in the message box when you sign up at the website. You may download the Writer's Guidelines at this link. Need A Smile? Check Out The JK Wedding Entrance Dance
Hi Everyone, Occasionally, we'll include a video on our blog if it grabs our attention or gives us a 'feel good' feeling. This one does...
If you are not one of the 23+ million people who have already viewed the JK Wedding Entrance Dance, take a few minutes and give yourself a smile...
Full marks to Jill and Kevin for turning their unexpected fame into a positive outcome - setting up a website and asking people to donate to an institute that helps prevent domestic violence.
Thanks to my friend Dr Angela Huntsman, an expat American in Australia, for sending it through.
Enjoy! Andrea.

Congratulations Kim Edwards: Success Story Woman Wins Top Local Honour
Hi Everyone, Congratulations go out today to Kim Edwards, featured as our Expat Women August Success Story, who last week won one of the most prestigious business awards in her local region. Kim took out the Sunshine Coast Business Woman Of The Year award (Australia) - a much-coveted award which is highly competitive.
The judges commented in the press that:
"Ms Hamer said the judging panel had also been impressed by Ms Edwards' community-minded approach to teaching English around the world.
"The thing that struck me about her was that she considered English was not a privilege, it was a necessity for everyone to have," Ms Hamer said.
"When she went into one country, the English-speaking schools were charging thousands of dollars for people to do their program.
"She said 'we didn't need to charge that, we charged what we charged'. It was about everyone having the opportunity to learn."
Ms Hamer said Ms Edwards would be a wonderful ambassador for the Sunshine Coast Business Women's Network because she was a "personable person"."
Congratulations Kim and congratulations Sea English Academy!

Moving To The United States?
Hi Everyone, If you are going to the United States as an expatriate, you might like to take a quick read of Coppergate International's article (written for their client base of employers and published in their latest newsletter) about medical issues when moving to the United States.
"Entering the US and navigating the medical system is one of the most frightening aspects of a transferee's transition into life here. If they are arriving from a country that has a centralized medical system, (such as the National Health Service in the United Kingdom) it is an incredibly difficult adjustment to have to reach for your wallet each time you step into a doctor’s office. To ensure your transferees start off the right way for their medical requirements, our tips would be..."

Want To Speak At The FIGT Conference, Houston, March 2010?
Hi Everyone, If you are interested in speaking at the upcoming Families In Global Transition (FIGT) Conference, here is a final reminder that the proposal deadline is September 1.
The 2010 FIGT conference will be held in Houston, Texas, March 4-6. It is honestly a great conference to go to if you are involved in the industry supporting families/expats abroad. The people that attend are like 'old friends' and you should genuinely get something out of it... especially if you get a chance to speak there as well.

Settling-In To Life In Malaysia
Hi Everyone, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is treating me really well! Everyone is really friendly and the food, shopping and leisure-time activities are fantastic. It is very hard to find an expat that does not love living here.
Slowly-but-surely, I am coming up for air in the relocation process... so hopefully this blog's momentum should pick up again soon. Thanks for your patience - and a special thank you for the emailed messages of support and good wishes, Andrea.

Moving to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
Hi Everyone, It has been a little quiet on this blog of late because my family and I are moving next week to international assignment number three: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
From Australia, to Indonesia, to Mexico, to Australia... and now to Malaysia... I suppose I will be what you call an expat-repat-expat... or something like that. For those of you living in KL, please reach out and help me out a little. :-)
For those of you overwhelmed with your own intenational move right now, hang in there - there is usually light at the end of the tunnel!
Thanks and best wishes always, Andrea.

Happy Planet Index
Hi Everyone, Some of you might be interested in the Happy Planet Index (HPI) that we learnt about it this week when we were approving Rosangela Silva's This Australian Life blog for our Expat Women Blog Directory.
It is not an index of the happiest people or places, but it is an index which aims to measure "what truly matters to us - our well-being in terms of long, happy and meaningful lives - and what matters to the planet - our rate of resource consumption".
Here are the Top 10 countries on the Happy Planet Index:
- Costa Rica;
- Dominican Republic;
- Jamaica;
- Guatemala;
- Vietnam;
- Colombia;
- Cuba;
- El Salvador;
- Brazil; and
- Honduras.
The positions of other countries of interest include:
53. Sweden;
74. United Kingdom;
75. Japan;
89. Canada;
102. Australia;
103. New Zealand;
114. United States; and
123. United Arab Emirates.
143. (Last position) Zimbabwe
"Download the new report The Happy Planet Index 2.0: Why good lives don’t have to cost the Earth, first published in July 2009. The report presents the results of the second global compilation of the Happy Planet Index, based on improved data for 143 countries around the world – representing 99 per cent of the world’s population. The results show that globally we are still far from achieving good lives within the Earth’s finite resource limits. But although the evidence shows that we are heading in the wrong direction, the achievements of some countries around the world provide reasons to believe that we can achieve true sustainable well-being."
Have a great day/evening! Andrea

Culture Smart Looking For Writer For India
Hi Everyone, The Culture Smart series needs a writer for India...
Quoting Jo Parfitt's blog:
"The ideal author is an English-speaking expatriate who has lived in the country for some time and is thoroughly well versed in the local culture."
"Kuperard’s Culture Smart guides are short introductory books that alert first-time visitors to the values and attitudes of different countries. They do not duplicate the hard information given in conventional guidebooks but rather focus on the human dimension, on a country’s culture, so as to enable foreign visitors both to be understanding guests and to get the most out of their visit..."
"Kuperard plans to publish a completely new volume on India next year. The book will follow an established series format, and the text will be between 28,000 and 30,000 words long. The fee is £1,000, payable half on receipt and acceptance of the manuscript, and half thirty days afterwards."
If you are interested in this project, please email Jo Parfitt in the first instance. Thanks.

Globe Women Newsletter: Croatia's New Female Prime Minister & More...
Hi Everyone, Two interesting segments in Globe Women's newsletter yesterday that might interest you:
Croatia's New Female Prime Minister
There is a new addition to the elite group of women who lead nations. The Honorable Jadranka Kosor became Croatia’s first female Prime Minister on July 6, 2009, after the mid-term resignation of former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader who had served for six years. Her ascension increases the number of women serving as Presidents or Prime Ministers to 18 or 9.2% of the total number of leaders holding these titles – a sharp increase from 5.4% in 2004 when the Global Summit of Women first started tracking these numbers.
A former Minister of Family, Veterans and Inter-generational Solidarity, Ms. Kosor also served as Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of the Croatian Democratic Union. She is credited with doubling the number of female candidates in her party during the 2000 elections. In her recent speech to her parliamentary colleagues to secure their support, she made a direct appeal to the women MPs: “"Women should be given a chance where there is real power and money. This is a right opportunity for that," she said and added further: “I will lead both the government and the (HDZ) party with a strong female hand.”
A lawyer by training who built an exemplary career as a journalist prior to entering politics, Prime Minister Kosor faces an economic crisis as well as the challenge of reviving Croatia’s stalled efforts to become a member of the European Union. (Source: Yahoo.com, 7/6/09).
Xerox's Newest CEO: Ursula Burns
At Xerox’s May shareholder’s meeting, Ursula Burns was named as the successor to current CEO Anne Mulcahy, who was stepping down in a well-planned transition. Burns will be the first African American female CEO, making Xerox the first Fortune 500 company to be headed back to back by two women. Mulcahy is credited for turning Xerox around and saving it from near bankruptcy. She has also successfully executed a smooth succession in the leadership of the company, providing continuity of the turnaround she spearheaded. The number of women CEOs of U.S. Fortune 500 companies remains, however, at 15, or 3%.
Burns has played a pivotal role at Xerox in recent years: overseeing corporate strategy, global accounts, IT and human resources. She worked alongside Mulcahy during her efforts to revitalize Xerox. Burns successfully negotiated with the company's unions to cut thousands of jobs. While Xerox's share price is still low, the company is profitable again and has expanded its market. At a speech at Oregon State University in September, Burns commented on Xerox’s turnaround: "We are poised for greatness and for success. We have pulled ourselves back from the brink of bankruptcy and taught ourselves that we can do just about anything we aspire to do, if we work hard and put our head down." (Source: NPR News, 5/22/09)
