Survey: What is an Expat Woman's Role in Top-Level Management Decision-Making?

Hi Everyone, Pamela Muñoz is an expat in South Korea who is doing her thesis on professional/working expat women in Asia and needs your help...

If you fit her criteria above, Pamela would love 10 minutes of your time to please complete her online survey entitled "Expat Women's Role in Top-Level Management Decision-Making".

"I would like to ask for your help in getting participants to answer a survey I have developed for all working, professional expat women.  I'd like to know what types of work they do, what industry, what country and how empowered they feel in their positions.

My theory is that many of the high-level women professionals, in male-dominated societies, are still not being regarded as a true asset. This has been my experience working in Korea, along with some of my other female colleagues.

My thesis is trying to identify if this is only true of Korea or in other countries as well.  All too often, the expat (male or female) is simply a figure head to show how 'global' the company is but that person has little say in true decision making for the firm.  This is a quantitative study to either prove or disprove my theory." Pamela

Please click here to participate in the survey, or click here to email Pamela directly.  Thanks.

Expat Job Seekers and Entrepreneurs: Can You Be Found?

Hi Everyone, If you are an expat job seeker or entrepreneur, I invite you to read the guest blog post I wrote this week for Adrienne Graham's Fearless Woman Magazine.

The post is entitled Job Seekers and Entrepreneurs: Can You Be Found? and I hope you get something out of it. It starts like this...

"Once upon a time, job seekers looked for jobs, entrepreneurs looked for clients, and occasionally, employers and clients advertised their needs to the general marketplace – crossing their fingers each time and hoping for a positive, quality response. That was the old marketplace.

Today, we are living in a whole new generation of job and client search. Employers are proactively targeting specific job candidates and clients are seeking out the best entrepreneurial businesses with which to partner. The traditionally-hunted have become the hunters, and the old-style hunters have morphed into the hunted. It is a very interesting dynamic and it is shaking up the whole job/client search paradigm.

Example One: The Large Recruiter
Recently, I met a very senior HR Director working for a very large telecommunications company. He told me..."

To read more, please support Adrienne's new online magazine and click here.  Many thanks.  Andrea :-)

PS. Feedback very welcome, by the way (either on our blog or Adrienne's)!

Have You Ever Worked Abroad? Would You Like 3 Free Coaching Sessions & A Free Book?

Hi Everyone, Elizabeth Kruempelmann of Global Citizen Coaching is updating the work abroad section of her 2004 book The Global Citizen: A Guide to Creating an International Life and Career (affiliate link) and she is looking for your story of working abroad.

If you have ever worked abroad (as an employee or as a freelancer), or if you have ever taken part in a work-exchange program, internship or volunteer program abroad, Elizabeth would love to hear from you (about what obstacles you faced, how you overcame them and what tips you could offer others).

Elizabeth says your story does not need to be long: 50 - 300 words is great.  She is just looking for words of wisdom for others who aspire to work abroad.

In return, for each story included in her updated book, Elizabeth is willing to offer three free coaching sessions (on the subject of your choice) plus a copy of her updated book!  That's pretty impressive as an incentive for writing only 50 - 300 words - so get your thinking caps on and give it a go!

Deadline for submissions to Elizabeth is next Monday, 24 May.  The stories selected for inclusion will be announced by Elizabeth (to her network) on 31 May.

Thanks and good luck!  Andrea

"Woodridge, Ill. (Sept. 14, 2009) - The ongoing economic downturn has forced many companies to dramatically scale back the number of employees they are relocating for international assignments, but has left other industries virtually unscathed, a new report exploring international mobility trends from Brookfield Global Relocation Services has found.

In fact, certain industries - among them telecommunications, oil and gas - are experiencing an uptick in their employee relocation activities due to mergers, emerging global markets and other factors, according to a recently released report, International Mobility: The Impact of the Current Economic Climate.

The report queried senior international mobility professionals responsible for international assignment strategy at a number of the world's leading companies. Combined, the mobility managers interviewed from a select group of corporations representing a worldwide employee population of more than 2.2 million employees."

"The report's findings pointed to four key trends currently facing multinational companies:

  1. A reduction in the volume of assignments due to the recession. This is occurring in industries that have been hit especially hard by the economic downturn, including: automobile manufacturing, information technology service and the financial services sectors.
  2. Changes in the volume of assignments. However, these changes are not directly caused by the recession. This trend is impacting the high technology, engineering, retail, financial and information services industries.
  3. No impact so far, but companies expect a general tightening soon. These industries include pharmaceutical, food and consumer products manufacturing, and logistics sectors.
  4. An increase in the number of employee relocations. This trend is primarily occurring in the telecommunications, oil and gas sectors, and with some professional services firms.

"...companies and industries that are experiencing increased relocation activity are typically involved in:
  1. Moving into new international partnership arrangements;
  2. A merger or acquisition Developing emerging markets;
  3. Creating global tools, processes and programs;
  4. Creating a cohesive culture or employer brand; and/or
  5. Closing long-term global capability and skills gaps."
