Want one of Your Expat Stories included in Jo Parfitt's updated book 'Forced to Fly'?

Hi Everyone, Here is a message from our good friend, Jo Parfitt (author of 28 books and an expert on the expat writing scene)...

"Back in 1998 I published an anthology of humorous writings about living overseas and called it 'Forced to Fly'. I sold over 2,000 copies and one forward-thinking international oil company even bought 200 copies to give to their international staff. Now, thanks to constant prods from satisfied readers I have decided to republish it in a second edition later this year.

So, to celebrate, I would like to include 20 new pieces of writing of up to 1,000 words in length. They can be on any specific incident or any theme that could only have happened to you because you were living abroad. Like how amusing your life became when you lived in Holland and began to travel everywhere by bicycle, or how you entered into the local Oktoberfest with more gusto than was appreciated, or the pickle you found yourself in when driving in India.

Laughter is the best medicine and Forced to Fly not only makes readers laugh with its funny stories, but also includes chapters on coping with culture shock and how to be happy. In the second edition we will also have a brand new chapter on developing resilience.

Entries will close on August 31st 2011. All winning entries will appear in the book and winners will not only receive two free copies and have the ability to buy additional copies of the book at discount but their entries will be included on the blog throughout 2012. Please send your entries to me (Jo Parfitt) via email."

This is a great opportunity to have one of your articles published. So if you are interested, get your thinking caps on, and good luck! Andrea :)

Expat Women: Confessions - Launch Party Photos

Hi Everyone, Firstly thank you very, very much to those of you who have supported our newly-launched book: Expat Women: Confessions - 50 Answers to Your Real-Life Questions about Living Abroad!

A few of you have asked if we had a launch party for our book. The answer is yes. Sort of...

Okay, here's the confession (pardon the pun)... I live in Malaysia and my co-author Victoria Hepworth lives thousands of miles away in Dubai, so a joint launch on a limited budget was a little tricky.

So instead, I hijacked the first night of my dear friend Nan Singh's girls' getaway weekend (6-8 May) to a beach resort here in Malaysia, asked my friends to dress in black, happily gave them all a free copy of the hot-off-the-press book, in a pretty pink bag with Teuscher chocolates, and took some photos.

And so with this, yes, we had a small launch - and here are our photos! (Victoria was with us in spirit, as was Gisella Apicella.) Andrea x

Cartier Women's Initiative Awards

Hi Everyone, Whilst it might be a bit late for you to submit a comprehensive entry for this year's competition, here is a wonderful competition you might like to diarize for next year. It is the Cartier Women's Initiative Awards and 2011 entries are due March 15.

Here are some criteria details:

"The project to be considered for the Cartier Women's Initiative Awards must be an original for-profit business creation in the initial phase (1-3 years old) led by a woman.

  • The “for-profit” requirement: the business submitted for the Award must be designed to generate revenues. We do not accept non-profit project proposals.
  • The “originality” requirement: we want your project to be a new concept, conceived and imagined by the founder and her team and not a copy or subsidiary of an existing business.
  • The “initial phase” requirement: the project you submit should be in the first stages of its development with one year of operations and sales to account for but no older than 3-4 years. The ‘age’ of the company will not be measured solely on the basis of the date of incorporation. The development and size of the company will also be taken into account.
  • The main leadership position must be filled by a woman. A good command of English is required (both verbal and written) to take full advantage of the benefits the Award has to offer.
  • All entrants must be aged 18 or the age of legal majority in their respective countries or states of citizenship, whichever is older, on the day of the application deadline of March 15, 2011."

Here are the details about how to apply.

Here you can read about the 2010 Laureates.  The awards ceremony for 2011 will be held in France in October. I look forward to reading about this year's winners! Andrea

Have You Ever Worked Abroad? Would You Like 3 Free Coaching Sessions & A Free Book?

Hi Everyone, Elizabeth Kruempelmann of Global Citizen Coaching is updating the work abroad section of her 2004 book The Global Citizen: A Guide to Creating an International Life and Career (affiliate link) and she is looking for your story of working abroad.

If you have ever worked abroad (as an employee or as a freelancer), or if you have ever taken part in a work-exchange program, internship or volunteer program abroad, Elizabeth would love to hear from you (about what obstacles you faced, how you overcame them and what tips you could offer others).

Elizabeth says your story does not need to be long: 50 - 300 words is great.  She is just looking for words of wisdom for others who aspire to work abroad.

In return, for each story included in her updated book, Elizabeth is willing to offer three free coaching sessions (on the subject of your choice) plus a copy of her updated book!  That's pretty impressive as an incentive for writing only 50 - 300 words - so get your thinking caps on and give it a go!

Deadline for submissions to Elizabeth is next Monday, 24 May.  The stories selected for inclusion will be announced by Elizabeth (to her network) on 31 May.

Thanks and good luck!  Andrea

Want to Win a Kindle for You and Your Friend?

Hi Everyone, In an effort to further raise awareness of Expat Women and the plethora of free resources we have available for women living abroad, please support our 'Tell A Friend' competition and tell as many friends as you can to join ExpatWomen.com and to answer "Friend" in the "How Did You Hear About Us?" box.

On 30 April at 5pm New York time, we will compile a list of every new member who was referred by a "Friend" and then ask someone independent of ExpatWomen.com to randomly select a winning number that will match one of the new member numbers who were referred by a "Friend".

The winning member will be emailed from contactus@expatwomen.com and asked who referred them. If they do not reply within seven calendar days they will be emailed again. If they do not reply within a further seven calendar days they will forfeit their chance to win and a new winner will be randomly selected. This process will continue until we have a winner who responds to the winning notification email with the name of their referring friend, so that we can be sure that we actually have a winner (and their referring friend) to claim these great prizes!

The winning member and their (one only) referrer (who must also be a current member of ExpatWomen.com) will each win an Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" display diagonal E Ink® edition, 8" x 5.3" x 0.36") valued on Amazon.com at 1 March 2010 @ US$259. Judges decision will be final.

So please rally some support for us and encourage your friends to join Expat Women today!

Thanks so much in advance for your support, Andrea.

PS. In response to a few questions about this post, I need to add that: If you are already an ExpatWomen.com member and receive our monthly newsletters, you do not have to join again on the sign-up page. Just ask your friends to visit that page and sign up please. Thanks. :-)
